Energy rebate scheme -
Council tax rebate to help with increased home energy costs
You will be aware of the government’s support packaged to help households with the increase in energy costs, including the council tax energy rebate of £150.
The one-off payment for eligible homes with a council tax band of A to D will be paid within the coming weeks. We are working to ensure the rebate is only paid to qualifying households as part of steps to reduce fraud and overpayments.
Payments
We have until 30 September 2022 to make payments to those initially eligible, and until 30 November for those as part of the discretionary scheme (to be discussed at Cabinet next week).
Payments will be made in one of two ways.
Automatically:
Eligible direct debit payers, who signed up by 1 April and have paid their first instalment this financial year, will receive their money directly by the end of May.
In the case of multiple residents who are jointly liable, the payment will be made to the live bank account held for the household, providing the name(s) of the bank account held matches one of those persons named on the council tax bill.
If the direct debit details do not match the council tax bill payer, for example the council tax bill is paid from a third-party bank account, we cannot pay these automatically.
Cash payment through the post office
For those that do not pay by direct debit or have matching details, we will be using the Post Office pay-out voucher scheme to make the payment.
The person named on the council tax account will receive a letter with a barcode that enables them to pick up the cash payment from any Post Office branch, with appropriate identification. Letters will be posted in May 2022.There is no need to apply for this or to hand over any bank account information, it will be sent automatically to all eligible households.
